Does the sould exist beyond death?

Philosophers, theologians, mystics, and poets have all grappled with its essence, often placing it at the very core of what makes us human. Following is a breakdown of how it's been interpreted across time and cultures:

Philosophically, Plato described the soul as the immortal essence of a person, rational, spirited, and appetitive. It survives the body and seeks truth and wisdom.

Theologically, Christianity often teaches that the soul is eternal, created by God, and judged after death, destined for heaven or hell.

Islam similarly holds the soul as eternal, with its fate determined by earthly deeds and divine judgment. Hinduism sees the soul (or atman) as a sliver of universal spirit, journeying through cycles of birth and rebirth until liberation (moksha). Buddhism, paradoxically, teaches anatta—no permanent soul—but believes in a continuity of consciousness across lifetimes.

Biblical evidence that the soul exists beyond death:

The Scriptures offer numerous passages that suggest the soul continues after physical death. The following are key verses and themes that support this belief:

First, let's consult Old Testament views:
Ecclesiastes 12:7 – “The dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” This implies a separation of body and spirit at death, with the spirit continuing on. To my Jehovah's Witnesses friends, this verse is not talking about the air that is in the lungs of men.

Daniel 12:2, “Many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.” Suggests resurrection and conscious existence beyond death.

Psalm 16:10, “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay.” Indicates hope for preservation of the soul beyond the grave.

New Testament Affirmations
Matthew 10:28 – “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” Distinguishes between body and soul, affirming the soul’s endurance beyond physical death.

Luke 23:43, Jesus to the thief on the cross: “Today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Implies immediate conscious existence after death.

Philippians 1:23, Paul says he desires “To depart and be with Christ, which is far better.” Suggests the soul’s presence with Christ after death.

Revelation 6:9 describes souls under the altar crying out to God, clearly conscious and active after death.

Hebrews 12:2, refers to “The spirits of the righteous made perfect,” again implying post-death existence.

The Resurrection of Jesus as Central Evidence:
1 Corinthians 15:20 – “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” His resurrection is seen as proof of life after death for believers.

John 5:28,29, Jesus speaks of a future resurrection where “All who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out.” Reinforces the idea of continued existence and judgment beyond death.

If you have scriptures that refute the above, show them and give an accurate account of their meaning the verse is found in.
