When was Jesus resurrected?

Because Jesus was crucified on Wednesday, 4/24/25, the day before Passover, it should be easy to figure out when he was raised from the grave, went into the lower parts of the earth, saw Mary, then ascended to the throne of his Father and returned to meet his disciples on the road to Emmaus.

Using the King James Bible, let’s walk through the timeline using Wednesday, April 24, 31 A.D., as the crucifixion date, harmonizing it with Jewish reckoning of days, and the prophetic sign of three days and three nights.

Jesus' crucifixion and burial, Wednesday, April 24, 31 A.D., the Passover fell according to our calendar on April 25, 31. Jesus is crucified and dies around 3 PM (Matthew 27:46-50). He was buried before sunset (John 19:31; Luke 23:54), marking the start of the High Sabbath, the first day of Unleavened Bread (Leviticus 23:5–7).

Scriptures tell us he was three days and three nights in the tomb. Jesus had prophesied: Matthew 12:40, “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so, shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

Night 1 Wednesday night (Apr 24–25 First night in the tomb
Day 1 Thursday (Apr 25) First day
Night 2 Thu night (Apr 25–26) Second night
Day 2 Friday (Apr 26) Second day
Night 3 Fri night (Apr 26–27) Third night
Day 3 Saturday (Apr 27) Third day

Jesus rose near sunset on Saturday, April 27, 31 A.D., exactly three days and three nights after burial, fulfilling His own prophecy. He then descends in his glorified body, incorruptible and immortal, and in all his glory to the spirits in hell, proving his resurrection. He then returns to the earth and early Sunday morning, April 28, John 20:1, he meets with Mary Magdalene at the tomb while it is still dark, not yet having ascended to the Father.

He tells Mary, John 20:17, “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father.”

Shortly after, He ascends to the heavenly throne, presenting Himself to His Father as the first fruits (Leviticus 23:10–11; 1 Corinthians 15:20).

Later that same day, Sunday, April 28, Jesus appears to the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–31). He has now ascended and returned, bearing the marks of victory and fulfilling the typology of the wave sheaf offering. He has shown himself in all his glory to those under the earth, on the earth, and to the angelic host in heaven.

The crucifixion on Wednesday, April 24, 31 A.D. (3 PM)
His burial Wednesday, before sunset
His resurrection Saturday, April 27, near sunset
He descends to the Lower parts of the earth. Sunday, April 28,
He appears to Mary, Sunday, April 28, early dawn
He ascends to Father Sunday, April 28, shortly after dawn
Appears on road to Emmas, Sunday, April 28, later that day

This timeline satisfies Matthew 12:40, and also aligns with the feast typology, the Jewish calendar, and the sequence of appearances recorded in the Gospels, both scriptural and prophetically rich.
All four Gospels agree that the resurrection was discovered on the first day of the week, which is Sunday in Jewish reckoning. So, Sunday isn’t just the first day, it’s the day of resurrection, the day of firstfruits, and the beginning of a new creation.
