Religion is the Opium of the Masses
Karl Marx.
Agree or Disagree?
Marxism is one of the most logical, well founded and generally plausible philosophies I have come across.
I believe religion was hyped up as a mechanism of control.

As a pagan, it seems to me that strict doctrine is more to blame than religion itself. I think religion is, at it's truest form, a fluid and natural thing, capable of adapting and changing as needed to fulfill it's role in the lives of the faithful.
When you develop a strict religious law, and put clergy in control of secular law (Such as the medieval church, or some sects of modern Islam) then indeed you turn it into a convenient and effective way to control the people.
I don't think religion is to blame so much as strict institutionalism of religious ideas that may or may not be relevant.
