Why is Jesus so different than the other prophets?

Post by Murad »

Jesus did not do anything by his own authority.
This fact is verified by John 5:30 & John 14:31 & Matthew 20:23
By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
-
But the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. "Come now; let us leave.
-
Jesus said to them, "You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father."
As you can see; like all prophets; his authority was not supreme; thus it will be wrong to exalt him as a "God"

Most of his life experiences had parallels in the O.T
For example:
1. Born without a Father (Hebrews 7:3)
2. Fed the multitudes (II Kings 4:42-44)
3. Walked on water; Similar to Moses (Exodus 14:22)
4. Healed the lepers and blind; So did others (II Kings 5:14, 6:17, Acts 3:7, Acts 5:15-16)
5. Brought the dead to life; So did others (I Kings 17:22, II Kings 4:34, 13:21, Ezekiel 37:1-14)
6. Cast out devils; Said others can too (Matthew 7:22, 12:27, Luke 11:19)
7. Rose from the dead; So did others (Ezekiel 37:1-14)
8. Ascended to heavens; So did other prophets (Genesis 5:24, Hebrews 11:5, II Kings 2:11-12)

Question for debate:
Why was Jesus so special when compared to the other prohets?(Besides being a Messiah)
Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" without being put to the test?
We have tested those before them, for GOD must distinguish those who are truthful, and He must expose the liars.

(Quran 29:2-3)

Jesus was the Son of God. He possessed his own power to perform miracles. The others you mentioned perform miracles only with the help of God. Jesus was God in human form.

Number 7 is talking about Israel. It isn't mentioning the actual resurrection of a human body, but the restoration of a country.

Also and most important distinction is that Jesus was perfect and without sin, the spotless lamb. The others you mentioned were humans born in sin and each had their human flaws. Jesus didn't.

Prophets are supposed to make prophecies.
And the prophecies are supposed to come true.

Let's see if we can establish Jesus' credentials as a prophet.

Can anyone think of a prophecy by Jesus that has come true?

What does it mean 'Son of God' . What evidence beyond religious tradition and dogma do you have that Jesus was the 'Son of God'. Do you understand what the idiom 'Son of God' referred to in 1st century Judah?

Other than religious writings written for a theological purpose, what evidence do you have that Jesus was 'Sinless'. What does that mean, and how can you show that?

Can you show those words actually HAVE meaning, rather than be religious rhetoric?
“What do you think science is? There is nothing magical about science. It is simply a systematic way for carefully and thoroughly observing nature and using consistent logic to evaluate results. So which part of that exactly do you disagree with? Do you disagree with being thorough? Using careful observation? Being systematic? Or using consistent logic?

Your question includes and excludes the answer at the same time for what made Jesus exceptional was the very thing you don't want to consider - Jesus was The Messiah.

All the prophets the preceded him in some way spoke or prefigured Jesus from Moses to Daniel thus Jesus uniquely was the embodiment of everything ever written in scritpure. While other prophets performed single or even multiple acts of God, no one Prophet did them ALL. No other prophet had a pre-human existence, no other prophet was born of a virgin as a perfect human, no other Prophet died in payment for the "original sin" thus giving humans the opportunity to live forever and never die and no other prophet was bought back to life directy by the Almighty to be raised to heaven as a spirit to regain his heavenly existence in an exulted position. No other prophet was subsequently giving kingly authority to destroy the wicked and take over complete control of the planet. No other prophet has an eternal position above all living beings except God. Jesus wasn't A prophet, Jesus was THE Prophet.

Regarding your list, the word and the lives of the Hebrew Prophets prefigured (provided examples) of what the Messiah would later do, so people would know what to look for. So all of this is proof that Jesus was the Messiah so instead of saying "so did he" it is more appropriate to say "thus proving Jesus was the messiah.."

To illustrate: Suppose someone was coming to visit you but you didn't know what he looked like or have a picture. Someone that knew what he looked like might say "well he's got a beard like Mr Grey the Grocer, he's very tall like Michel Jordan, he's very noble and intelligent, like Abraham Lincoln ... when someoen comes along with a Beard like Mr Grey, as Tall as Jordan and speaks like Lincoln it would be unreasonable to say "Hmm it can't be HIM because, Mr Grey had a beard so does he, this man is tall but so was Michel Jordan and he is very wise but so was Abraham Lincoln... The person you are trying to identify MUST by definition be like those that came before but this one doesn't have ONE of the features he has ALL of them. So we can conclude, this must be the one!

1. Born without a Father (Hebrews 7:3) Mechizedek was of course not born literally without a father (see scriptures below)*
2. Fed the multitudes (II Kings 4:42-44)
3. Walked on water; Similar to Moses (Exodus 14:22) -- although of course Moses didn't literally walk ON the red sea...

*#1. Born without a Father (Hebrews 7:3)
New International Version (©1984)
Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever.

New Living Translation (©2007)
There is no record of his father or mother or any of his ancestors--no beginning or end to his life. He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God.

International Standard Version (©2008)
He has no father, mother, or genealogy, no birth date recorded for him, nor a date of death. Like the Son of God, he continues to be a priest forever.

GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)
No one knows anything about Melchizedek's father, mother, or ancestors. No one knows when he was born or when he died. Like the Son of God, Melchizedek continues to be a priest forever.

are you sure jesus was the only who was of "virgin birth"? there are so many other gods that born of virgin like Isis ,horus Buddha, and many other gods like krishna

however Isa 7:14 is a mistranslated verse 'almah' is not virgin its young woman.

in Gen 24:43 this verse actually unaware of virgin birth

Gal 4:4
paul uses the law in association with the corruptibility of the flesh

Roman 1:3-4 "......was born of the fleshnot by the divine impregnation"

hence ,from the above mentioned verses said jesus is not of virgin of birth ,the church just coverup the the notorious Yeshua had during his time.

best regards

For the umpteenth time, prophecy isn't soothsaying.
It is:
1. insight and discernment
2. speaking truth to power
3. calling back to focus on god
4. a literary form.
The OT prophets are great. But none were oracles.

So your request is based on a mistake. Repeat: prophecy is NOT predicting the future (although biblical literalists seem to have got it in their heads that it is. But a bible class in a good college, grad school, or seminary will set them straight).

Or just read:

The Prophets, by Abraham Joshua Heschel

The Prophetic Imagination, by Walter Brueggemann

Both are classics, representing the teaching you will find at the vast majority of accredited seminaries in the U.S.A. and in the world.

Are you saying that the expression fulfilled prophesy is without meaning?

Google the expression fulfilled prophesy and see that your attempts to redefine this word is like spitting into the wind. Or search the New Testament for instances where it is said that this or that event was to fulfill what was previously written by one of the Prophets.

proph·e·sy [prof-uh-sahy]
–verb
  1. to foretell or predict.
  2. to indicate beforehand.
  3. to declare or foretell by or as if by divine inspiration.
  4. to utter in prophecy or as a prophet.
  5. to make predictions.
  6. to make inspired declarations of what is to come.
  7. to speak as a mediator between god and humankind or in God's stead.
  8. Archaic . to teach religious subjects.
Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.
First Epistle to the Church of the Thessalonians
The truth will make you free.
Gospel of John
