Hypothetical: You're god now

Post by The Duke of Vandals »

I watched part of Bruce Almighty (I like Morgan Freeman...) and thought of a scenario I'd like to share.

God appears to you and hands you a magic wand that makes you all-knowing and all-powerful... but not quite as powerful and wise as god. He tells you that he wants to test you. You're tasked to create a hypothetical universe that exists outside our own universe. He tells you that you should use the parameters of our universe as a guide (i.e. Free will = good. Square circles = bad, etc.), but nor is he looking for a carbon copy of our universe.

The debate is to describe what universe you'd make, what attributes it would have, and why they're "good".

Your thoughts.

It looks like God needs an architect and some contractors. What I wonder about is the poor taste.
I think the big useless pearls are just for looks. Granted it is extravagant and useless, just the kind of things the Lord loves.

Madeline:
They are if the architect is God! The gold and precious stones are most likely earthly materials glorified.
Why wouldn’t glorified mud do? Why have anything except glorified robs? Saints just walking about saying to each other;
“nice robe”,
“yours too, God gave me mine”,
“Oh really me too.”,
“nice robe”.

I would resign.
I would be wondering, where are the trees, the grass, the flowers? All that construction sounds so sterile and uninteresting.

Our minds are rarely distant from the subject that Madeline raises. The rules of our universe dictate this, for natural selection inevitably favours those who have a fascination for reproductive activities. I think it's a shame that it should have to be this way, as there is a dark side-effect that causes needless suffering. But I think the logic is unavoidable -- anyone who finds it easy to control their urges associated with reproduction is bound to be less represented in populations containing people who are more compelled.

I can't think of an effective alternative other than to implement some sort of "devil" who overrides peoples will to achieve the same ends. :-k

Am I a sinner for thinking, "That would make an awesome Doom level" ? We can put imps in suits and have them throw briefcases, to simulate the lawyers...
