Was Jesus a good son?

We are told that Jesus loves us, and presumably loved his mum and dad. Yet any interaction is minimal; did he ever hug his mother or even talk to his father. We don't know. It would seem that Jesus was keen to play down his family. He wasn't the ideal son, but a man who rejected them. Only at the last minute did he leave his mother in the care of somebody else, having caused her endless pain.

We would have expected Jesus to demonstrate admirably the command: Honour thy parents, but there is precious little of honour in him for his mum and dad.

Was Jesus a good son?

Did he break the commandment?

Thank you for your admission, yes we can agree you have only presented one texual support for your insinuations of bad behaviour, namely Jesus reply to his parents at ages 12. I will address this point when I have a little more time.

We must construe biblical passages in whatever way our resources indicate and I suppose that applies equally to our tackling of posts. Words can be treacherous brutes, even more so phrases and clauses, setting traps for the unwary. Jesus was compliant when asked for more wine, but not particularly civil. Jesus was rather uncivil when his "family" came to get him but I think from previous posts we assume Mary may have been at home with a sore throat, or some such thing. There are many escape routes that keep our faith alive. Thank God.

I wait with avid anticipation for your defence of the whining schoolboy.

I should say that perhaps neither my view of Jesus nor your own is correct. Even those who endow Jesus with miraculous, modern ministrations and see him as comforter and companion may be far from the truth. Perhaps Paul, whom I often malign, was right about his dark glass. The best see imperfectly and most see nothing at all.

Maybe he is a mirror and the best of us see beauty and truth while others read the wrinkles and horror in their own faces and take this to be the face of Christ. It would make sense of the idea that "Jesus is in us".
