What belifs make a Christain?

Post by Donray »

For me to ask a question in another topic I need to understand what beliefs a Christain must have to be called a Christian.

From my understanding in using this board, several online religious course, and my
knowledge on the bible I have come to the following:

There are only two beliefs that all Christians must have:

1: That Mary was a virgin and God created a baby in her.
2: Jesus was crucified and rose from bring dead.

It does matter if you think the bible is 100% true or 100% stories and myths.
It does not matter if ware magic underwear or not.
It does not matter if you are baptized or not.
It does not matter if your gay or not.
It does not matter what rituals you perform.
It does not matter if you belong to one of thousand Christain cults and main religions.
It does not matter if you pray or attend a church.

Nothing else matters.

Am I correct?

No wonder it is almost impossible to have a logical discuss about religion on the board where there are many kinds of Christians that have nothing in common.

Christians have thousands of differing bible interpretations.

They don't agree if Jesus is God, a separate Demigod, or all human.

Almost no Christian can tell us what heaven is like. They don't know if it is a physical place somewhere outside earth, a spiritual (not physical) place, if it will be a Earth, etc.

They have no common rituals or wordship methods. Some Christain religious don't belive other so called Christians are Christians.

They cannot agree if gays are evil and will go to hell. Is divorce OK and not?

They cannot even agree on what is required to get into heaven.
Everything Donray says in the above post is 100% true.

This is why I even refuse to bother arguing with the individual beliefs of so-called "Christians". It's an absolutely hilarious and meaningless term.

I try to debate the Bible. The dogma that the Christian religion is supposed to be founded on.

What is TRUE is that most so-called Christians actually reject that dogma verbatim. In fact they demand that the Bible is not literally true. They absolutely have to make this decree because they know that to try to argue for what the Bible actually says is futile.

All Christians who are not hardcore literal fundamentalists are actually in agreement with me whether they own up to it or not. They can't argue against my position because they actually support it.

My position is simple:

The Bible cannot be true as it is written in any rational literal sense. Period.

The vast majority of "Christians" agree with me on this point. This make them Biblical Atheists. The do not believe in the God that is literally described in the Bible.
Sojournerofthearth wrote: A Christian follows Christ's teachings. They emulate the life He led. They have the Spirit of God in them. They do what Jesus did.
No human follows the teaching of the so-called Christ. For one thing the Bible has Christ teaching:

Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
'
No human can do that. So it's impossible to do as Jesus taught according to the Bible.

Also to say, "They have the spirit of God in them" is nothing short of elevating themselves to a position of divine status that is above all others.

All this amounts to is a self-brainwashing technique used to convince themselves that they can do no wrong, and must necessarily always be correct in their religious position. After all, how could they possibly continue to believe that they have the spirit of God in them and simultaneously think that they might not have realized "Perfect Moral Values".

For a person to claim that they have the spirit of God in them is actually a quite dangerous psychological position to paint themselves into. They can no longer claim to doubt, or be confused about any moral issue. For how could they possibly be confused about these things if they have the spirit of God in them?

Clearly these religions are dangerous. They cause people to start thinking that they have "God on their side" and that they cannot be wrong.

That's a very dangerous position to place oneself in. Especially when they have no choice to but also decree that the Bible cannot be literally true.

What they have actually done in this case is toss Christian dogma in the doghouse and have proclaimed divine authority in that they speak for God because they have the spirit of God in them.

This is not a good place to be, and the very reason why religions are indeed dangerous. It causes some people to basically think they are God. After all, to claim to have the spirit of God within them is hardly any different from claiming to be God. At least in terms of being able to recognize "God's Morality". So they become an "authority" on God's morality. When in reality all they are really doing is voicing their own persona moral views and opinions and psychologically convincing themselves that God backs their opinions up.

Question: Don't they have to believe in the divinity of Jesus and the Holy Ghost? :-s
Doesn't number 1 cover the divinity of Jesus?

Isn't Holy Ghost another name for God or a separate god?

There are more than two beliefs that a true Christian has. The two you mention are important.

I don't see how a person could be a Christian and think that the Bible is 100% stories and myths. The Bible is the main way we get to know God and Christ.

Magic underwear, besides being unbelievably silly, is not in any way part of a Christian's life.

A person should follow Christ's example and be baptized if that person accepts all of the teachings of Jesus and wants to dedicate himself to the true God.

A true Christian would not practice homosexuality. There are many Scriptures that condemn it. If a person feels attracted only to people of the same sex, he can be a Christian if he/she remains celebate.

Rituals? I guess that depends on what they are.

It does matter which religious path you follow. Jesus said clearly that one must enter the narrow gate and stay on the narrow road that leads to life. He said that FEW would find it (or even look for it, I imagine!). That would negate the idea that "all roads lead to the same place." Jesus said that someone who is a true Christian would be "doing the will of the Father." (Matthew 7:13,14 & 21-23) The religion that follows Jesus' teachings would be the one to follow. It is possible to figure out who is doing what Jesus said to do.

It matters whether or not you pray. How can you be God's friend if you don't talk to Him? And it's important to pray to the right god! There are a variety of gods that people pray to. JEHOVAH is the only true God, and the One that Jesus said we must pray to.

Both of these men are gay. Both of them are true Christians. Neither is celebate.

So why do you say they are Christians?

Jesus indicated that practicing "porneia" was actually grounds for stoning, according to the Law. Porneia included adultery, bestiality, and homosexuality. None of those things was accepted by Jesus, because he upheld the Law given to Moses by YHWH, Jesus' Father and God. The Law was clear:

"You must not lie down with a male in the same way that you lie down with a woman. It is a detestable act." (Leviticus 18:22)

If Jesus believed and promulgated YHWH's Law (given to Moses), calling it God's TRUTH, (John 17:17) then it follows that Jesus did not accept active homosexuality and would not have allowed practicing gays to be in his close company. His Apostles reiterated his views on homosexuality.

"Males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene and receiving in themselves the full penalty which was due for their error." (Romans 1:27)

"Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers,...nor men who lie with men...will inherit God's Kingdom." (I Corinthians 6:9-11)

"Those who are lawless and rebellious, ungodly and sinners, disloyal and profane: murderers ...sexually immoral people, men who practice homosexuality, kidnappers, liars, perjurers, and everything else that is in opposition to the wholesome teaching." (I Timothy 1:9,10)

There is more, but I think these suffice to show that practicing homosexuals cannot call themselves true Christians. How can they say so, when they must ignore what the Bible says about homosexuality? Do they rip pages from their own Bibles?

Is it your position that no Christian ever commits any sin?

If not, then why are you singling out the sin of homosexuality?

Because they are Christians. They follow what they believe to be the teachings of Jesus Christ. Nothing else is required.

And who are you to say they aren't? Spreading hatred in Jesus' name is never a good idea.

There are sins that we cannot help, that we inherited from Adam. Jesus died for those sins. His death does not cover DELIBERATE, WILLFUL sins that are PRACTICED. We all are sinners, but not all of us PRACTICE sin that we know God abhors.

I'm only addressing homosexuality now because it was brought up in the OP.
