As wisdom: Is it true that where our treasure is our heart is also?
What would be the advantage of such wisdom?

Post #2My heart is in my chest. My savings are kept primarily in an IRA not in my chest.
You've yet to establish that it is wisdom. What would be the advantage of such wisdom?

To be clear: Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.

I must assume that knowing is better than not knowing, venturing than not venturing; and that magic and illusion, however rich, however alluring, ultimately weaken the human spirit.

Post #3A chest. A treasure chest?
Although we could find some amusement in your post there is no chance you interpret words that literally irl.
Care to be less literal?

Re: Is it true that where our treasure is our heart is also?
Post #4That would depend on how one interprets the words. If one takes it literally to mean internal organs (heart) can be found, not inside ones body but in a location where items of monetary value are (for example in a satety deposit box in a bank) then no, its not wose and its demonstratively not true.
If one reads it to mean that people are often motivated by that which they value, then yes, I believe it is a truism. For help on how to determine what is literal or not see my earlier post: What does Literal / Non-literal mean ?

Re: Is it true that where our treasure is our heart is also?
But ...... You asked if it is true that where our treasure is our heart is also....
It depends who you are. Some people can do things, make things, find things, and for these people there is freedom from the need for treasures because their treasure is in their hands, hearts, minds. They can always provide for themselves and theirs.
But I was not so good at making things, and so as I worked I saved for the day when I would not be able to provide. My savings became my treasure and during the financial crashes, fires, stupidities and outrages of these days (in the UK) the fact that I don't have to find for food, heat, clothes etc is a great help for me and mine.
But if you are like John the Baptist who lived out in the wastelands, able to survive upon the surges of the migrations and the sends of the seasons, wanting for nothing that he could not provide for himself, then that's treasure as well.

Post #6That's good, and I went through the same problems in the 2010's. I had some luck (without praying for it) that saved my finances, and I'm ok now. but as our pal JW says it's a truism, if we don't take it literally as money or literal precious assets.oldbadger wrote: ↑Tue Oct 18, 2022 2:27 amAny wisdom is advantageous.......!

What we value, our 'heart' (they mean the mind) is there, of course. truism. Didn't someone try to argue that's our 'gods'? Well, in the absence of any god -belief maybe they are, but I'm not sure. I have a lot of interests, where my heart is, such as music, but I don't see that as my 'god'. It's not essential for human and social well being, and that is more my 'god' than my particular treasures.
But since we get the actual point, what was Matthew's as it is in the Sermon on the mount and I believe appears nowhere else (I'll check) and is Matthew' own opinion pushed into Jesus' mouth?..What's the context and meaning?
6.19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
I may be cynical, but the message seems to be a familiar one - don't bother with money, rather buy yourself heavenly credits, as that (in addition to Right Faith, of course) will not hurt as good works to bolster the RightFaith and may even compensate for a few sins. Like I say, I may be cynical, but I'll bet Matthew has a very specific place in mind where you should get rid of your money to. Yet again the church has its' hand out.

Actually, if you retract any heaven out of Matthew's message it can make reasonable sense, but if you slip heaven back in then you have the ideal for keeping masses in penury and submission to fat wealth and power. OK if you're in that last group, of course.
When I was ten our young scripture teacher made us learn Mat 6:19-21 by heart, and she caned one boy for not being able to write it all down exactly. (I wonder if that's how some elderly men here pay to get caned by gorgeous ladies....... not me!
