A Good God would not send a decent Atheist to hell.

Post by marketandchurch »

This was the post that got me banned on Christian Chat:
Then God doesn't care about the goodness and decency of an atheist, a buddhist, etc. And if that is the message you are telling me, then there is no point to being a good person. There is no point of fighting on behalf of the oppressed, as America did, in WWII. The only purpose of fighting the Japanese, and beating back the Nazi's should have been so that we could bring more people to christ...is that what your saying? Should America be sending food and aid to heathens in Haiti? Should America be helping out muslims in disaster relief fallowing a natural disaster, unless it is to bring them to Christ? Is a person's only value to you, there potential to become a convert? They have no humanity beyond that?

You have an old testament my_adonai, and you are to be as obsessed with its obsessions, as you are with the new testament's. And the Old Testament's preoccupation is fighting evil, championing the good, and making a more ethical existence, during this lifetime.

And unless you think Christians alone can make this lifetime a little better, a little less genocidal, with a little less starvation, a little less torture, etc, it is an unethical message to peddle, that a good God would demand goodness, unless one doesn't believe in his son. Then one's goodness is pointless. One might as well not care about not gossiping behind other people's back, destroying someone's dignity in public, sleeping with a coworker's wife, extorting an elderly couple that one was hired to help, raping a pre-pubcescent child, killing another human being because of their skin color, etc, etc, etc.

Apparently, I was challenging people's faith, and was just there to be anti-christian, in saying that a Good God would not send to hell decent people, simply because they do not believe in his Son. I got all sorts of less then appetizing replies, saying I'm screwed for eternity, if I don't accept Jesus. I feel that I am not alone, even within the Christian community, in thinking this as I've heard many catholic priests, and mainstream protestant pastors, while I was growing up, distancing themselves from such a belief. I don't know where people on this forum stand, but I'll put it up for debate:

  • Topic of Debate: A Good God would not send to hell a decent person, simply for not believing in his son.

If you agree with me, and are a Christian, please square your response with the rest of the New Testament. What I'm looking for is scriptural consistency to back up your position, and more importantly, how one will then re-read the entire message of the New Testament, if one wants to hold that position. I say this because I don't want you to drop scripture, simply because it doesn't conform to your own personal beliefs, but I am looking for how one can reinterpret the New testament, if one drops that central tenant, & for the rest of us, impediment, to everlasting life. Is there room for this? Or is the New Testament rigidly in the affirmative about Christ being the only way to heaven? Which is fine. That's their theology, but let's see where this goes.

When Jesus say this? Before His death and resurrection.

When Jesus died His blood was shed for our sins, and yes the law is our school master but it is not the way to salvation after Calvary. We are saved by the grace of God
It was before His death. Jesus did not say that His answer to the question was only good for a couple of weeks

REV.22 [12] And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. [13] I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. [14] Blessed are they that DO HIS COMMANDMENTS, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may ENTER IN THROUGH THE GATES INTO THE CITY.

Rev.22...last book of the bible. Still saying (after the cross) Keep Gods 10 commandments
Yes I am, the ten commandments have nothing to do with salvation, that is the law of Moses. The greatest of these commandment was to love your brother as your self.

All the law is was our school master.

The law is for spiritual children who need a baby sitter,

Wherefore the law was our school-master to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith." (Galatians 3:21-24).

A schoolmaster, (the Greek text gives, a child conductor), was one who held the child in restraint as they conducted the child from home to the school, making sure that there was no mischief along the way, and that the child arrived at the school. Then the child was given over to the care of the teacher, and the duty of the child conductor was ended. The child conductor did not stand in the back of the class room and continue to exercise control and authority over the child, for now the Teacher was in control, and there was to be no outside interference. So also, once we have been brought to Christ, and His anointing abides within us, we are to be led by the Spirit.
This thread is not about the 10 commandments but if you truly want to discuss the scriptures concerning the law theres a thread about the Sabbath on this site. Seek and you will find. I have a feeling I wont see you there. We can talk of the schoolmaster there.

No, just a response to your claim that I don't read the Bible.
Or perhaps you were proven wrong and cannot admit it?????
You've already quoted scripture proving yourself wrong. What more is needed?
Really??? sounds like someone got their religious feelings hurt and has no rebuttal???

The law of God is good, even Paul says that. Just because Paul couldn't seem to keep it, does not mean that nobody can. Moses said they are not too hard or far removed from you. (I'll try to find the reference) The will of God is contained in the law of God. The law is summarized by Jesus in the Golden rule and the two great commandments (which I believe are also in the Hebrew Bible (OT). Love of God and Love of neighbor.
Do You truly believe that if Paul the Apostile could not keep the law that anyone else can???

Sounds like a bunch of human carnal religous works not grace.
Why did Jesus die on Calvary?

Yeah, I can see that! My point was this thread was not a discussion about those who hear Gods voice and those which wish to make Gods law void. We shouldn't hijack the thread. That's rude.

Yes, really Benoni. You post scripture which shows how God reaches out to the world and then you say He's not reaching out to the world.
sounds like someone got their religious feelings hurt and has no rebuttal???
Actually, you're wrong about that too. :)
Why did Jesus die on Calvary?
Because He taught that people who obey Him are the ones who believe in God and the mainstream religious establishment didn't like His way of salvation. Claiming to be God didn't help either.

Did God saturate the world with the gospel after Jesus ascended to Heaven?
