The Adam and Eve boondoggle

The Adam and Eve boondoggle

According to Genesis 2, God created Adam and then later discovered that he had no 'helper' and made Eve from one of Adam's ribs.

Evidently 'God' did not realize that a single male human was not likely to reproduce. That seems a bit short-sighted for a supposedly all-knowing supernatural entity.

How could 'God' overlook such a glaring defect in the original situation?

Could it be that the Genesis tale is a bit wacky?

I happen to not agree with your interpretation of events:

QUESTION: If God knew Adam needed a mate, why did he make Adam to wait for her?

There a saying "All good things come to those that wait". Adam was going to be given a wonderful gift, but sometimes, in order to appreciate things we have to wait for them.

The bible implies that Adam had a longing for a mate, that he was "missing" her even though he had never encountered her. We know this because when he was eventually presented with a partner, he (Adam) exclaimed "At last!", indicating he had become aware of his need for someone physical that matched his intelligence and emotional, sexual and spiritual makeup that would complement him, reflective of what he had observed in the animal kingdom.

Image

Being made to wait, and reason on how essential a mate was, as well as how inadequate and eventually (possibly) unhappy he was without one, no doubt contributed to Adam appreciating Eve more than he would have if she had been with him from his very creation.

It is part of human nature and makeup to appreciate things more when we have been without them or had to work hard to obtain them. That is why, for example, children born to materially wealthy parents can often not appreciate the privilege and responsibility that comes from having money. Or individuals that have lost limbs or other members often voice how they never fully appreciated their function.

God could have made Adam to wait for Eve so he would appreciate how vital she was, not only to reproduce but for his emotional and mental well being. That without her he was incomplete, "not good" as God put it. That having lived for so many years (by bible chronology at least 40 ) without a mate, the wonders of the female character and capacities would make a lasting impression on him and help him to treat her with love, respect and appreciation.

You should hear Ted's theory on this
ttruscott wrote: Adam tried to find a mate among the animals. Why do that? To fix a "not good" of his being alone. Do you think it was GOD's idea to look among the animals for his mate when he had Eve waiting in the wings? No, probably not. So could Adam have been faithfully following HIS GOD when he did this? No, probably not. Therefore he was either ignoring GOD about this matter or in active rebellion to Eve as his mate but whatever the reason we can see that by looking for his mate among the animals he was probbly not being righteous and faithful which is the state of being sinful.
ttruscott wrote: GOD had Eve coming to be Adam's wife. What is the purpose of allowing him to look for his mate among the animals? That is, why would GOD resort to this tactic of letting him search through the animals for his mate IF Adam was faithfully following GOD's will for him, that is, willing to do whatever GOD wanted him to do, that is, in a state of righteousness and faith? Why did GOD have to first bring him all the animals and show him that they were unsuitable to be his help meet? If Adam was willing to believe GOD, why didn't HE just tell him that an animal was not what HE wanted and that HE had Eve planned already? This situation is better explained by a rebellious Adam than by a righteous Adam...

When you uncover one absurdity, you uncover many. Why would God, who managed to conjure Jupiter and its attendant satellites out of nothing, bother to go into surgery and get Eve? Of course the meaning is to show that women are subservient to men, as the Bible constantly reminds us, but does the creator of the Andromeda Nebula and the duck billed platypus really want to instruct us so?

There was a lot of trial and error at the start of time but God amended his mistakes with the Flood. Rome wasn't built in a day!

This is a common misunderstanding of Genesis and god's plan for man and woman. The idea that god wanted women to be "subservient" to men is a common misconception. ;)
Let us look at the facts. God creates a garden of delight. A paradise. yet, this man called Adam is not happy or content. He is in PARADISE and he is not content! Why not? Because he is an inferior being. God realizes that she made a slight mistake in the prototype. So, she takes a bone from the prototype and creates an entirely new model. A better model.
This is god's second attempt at creating a human. She actually REMOVES a part of the inferior model to create a better model. Which one sounds like the superior creation to you? The original, who was unhappy and had a part taken out? Or the new, improved model which was constructed from pieces of the original? Has an inventor ever created an INFERIOR model after creating an original? Or has the inventor IMPROVED on the original?
A second piece of evidence to demonstrate the superiority of the female model. Once Eve arrives, who is calling the shots in paradise? Is it Adam or Eve? Well, god was pretty clear that nobody should eat the fruit of a certain tree. Adam hung around paradise and never touched the tree. Eve arrives and decides she wants to eat the fruit. Adam can follow GOD ALMIGHTY and not eat the fruit, or he can follow the demands of Eve and eat the fruit. What does he do? He gives into his superior female and eats the fruit. Even against the will of god! Tell me, who is running this show? Who is subservient?
Finally, before Eve arrives the human race had no way to reproduce. The POWER of multiplying is the power of the female. No woman, no human race. Period. Done and dusted.
Once men overwhelmed women and took over religion they tried to diminish the role of the being that god herself made superior. When god created woman she was very clearly creating the superior human being. The Genesis story of Adam and Eve Bible demonstrates that.

That is a big leap. The Hebrew has none of that connotation.

Not until after the fall (and because of it) does God declare that there will be a hierarchy - that man will rule over his wife.

Not part of the original plan where humankind is in the image of God as man AND woman (not OVER).

Maybe your assumptions about God are wrong. Fix that and things might start making sense...

It's clear God is figuring stuff out as God goes. What more proof do you need?

I make no assumptions about gods – but often refer to the assumptions / claims / tales made by god worshipers. Note the use of the word “supposedly in my statement.

As far as I am concerned, all 'gods' are equally imaginary along with all their claimed actions and abilities.

I do not expect any god tales to make sense.
