So my question for debate is the title. Is evil necessary if God is good?
By necessary, I mean that the world could not be any other way.
My answer is yes, evil is necessary if God is good. God could not have made the world any other way other than evil exist.
Here is my reasoning. First, my definition of evil is the lack of the good, like darkness is the lack of light. Evil is not a thing in the world, but a lack of a thing, i.e. the good.
Perfect = having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics; as good as it is possible to be.
Only that which is eternal and good can be perfectly good, thus anything else that comes to exist will lack the good.
Because God is good, God will do the good.
It is good to bring about the world.
It is good to bring about freewill beings.
Freewill beings will do less than the good. They will do evil. They will cause suffering.
thus evil is necessary.

Post #2In other words you're asking: is it true that if god is good evil necessarily follows? That about it? . How about if god is evil would good necessarily follow?AquinasForGod wrote: ↑Mon Oct 31, 2022 9:45 pm So my question for debate is the title. Is evil necessary if God is good?
Well, if that's your definition then there's nothing to discuss, is there. My answer is yes, evil is necessary if God is good. God could not have made the world any other way other than evil exist.

We can run the argument in reverse and it still gets to God. If God were evil, then he could not do good. But good exists in the world, so there needs to be a reason for it.
I see no reason for good to exist understand materialism. If we start with the most fundamental properties of the universe, like attraction, repulsion, charge, etc, no one shows how we logically get from that to there being this property of good in the world.
Scientism must reject that good exists.

Post #6I don't think it is necessary. I think evil is possible, if God is good, because good God gives freedom and that means it is possible that some choose to reject good.AquinasForGod wrote: ↑Mon Oct 31, 2022 9:45 pm So my question for debate is the title. Is evil necessary if God is good?

Re: Is Evil Necessarily if God is Good?
Post #7I agree. There is no point in this topic. It looks to me like A4G wanting to discuss angels dancing on the heads of pins. If we entered into discussing the internal logic of theology, and found it made no sense, we would get the old 'God knows what He is doing' excuse. I have other battles to choose.Miles wrote: ↑Tue Nov 01, 2022 1:01 amIn other words you're asking: is it true that if god is good evil necessarily follows? That about it? . Post #8No. Evil, as in the total lack of goodness, is not necessary.AquinasForGod wrote: ↑Mon Oct 31, 2022 9:45 pm So my question for debate is the title. Is evil necessary if God is good?

Re: Is Evil Necessarily if God is Good?
Post #9But you just explained the necessity of evil. If some choose to reject the good. Is it possible that all people with freedom will choose the good? Is there any possible world were every human ever would choose the good? If not, then evil is necessary, meaning that in every possible world there will be at least one human that rejects the good.1213 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 01, 2022 5:26 amI don't think it is necessary. I will ask you the same question I asked the other fellow.
Is there any possible world were humans that have the freedom to choose only choose the good? That is in this possible world no human ever rejects the good? Is there a possible world where humans do not choose evil?
If there is no such possible world, then evil is possible in every possible world and thus it is necessary.
There is no possible world where freewill humans exist and evil doesn't exist.
If freewill humans exist in a world, then evil exists.
Unless you can show how evil might not exist if freewill humans exist.
