Why Doesn't Anyone Know What A God Is?
Post #1Debate Question: What is a god? Why is it that no one seems to understand the simple concept of god anymore? Hopefully what I will do here is demonstrate why no one seems to know what a god is by demonstrating what exactly a god is. Hopefully.

No, brother, two crossed sticks, are two crossed sticks that may represent something to a person or group.
You will have to find me anything that says the cross is a god.
I can find no one who worships a cross as a god, and I know of no one who even worships any idols any more.
As for my premise, of gods being imaginary and venerated, well, we are waiting for something to dispute it.
UNLESS you say you worship a cross as god?
I'll give you that one.
But if you worship a cross as a god, then a god is, again trivial, and unworthy of discussion.
As an aside, I am not advocating for dictionary definitions, you were.

Post #32But they do have one big advantage over gods like Jehovah. They actually exist and don't have to be imagined.

Post #33Nope. Jehovah said no such thing. Some ancient anonymous people put those words into their imagined god's mouth and passed them on to their gullible followers.

Anything that is worshiped can be termed a god, inasmuch as the worshiper attributes to it might greater than his own and venerates it. A person can even let his belly be a god. (Ro 16:18; Php 3:18, 19) The Bible makes mention of many gods [...] Hebrew Terms. Among the Hebrew words that are translated “God” is ʼEl, probably meaning “Mighty One; Strong One.”

I am sure you will agree, that the majority of deities are non-existent.
However, with nothing distinguishing your deity from any others, then all deities under this Britannica entry, are non-existent.
So again - a god is an imaginary being venerated by a culture.
I am hoping anyone can come up with any non-trivial exception.

Post #36No you aren't. But that's okay because the atheist don't get to decide what the gods are and it only demonstrates that they aren't particularly knowledgeable when it comes to what it is they think they know exists or not.Willum wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 7:38 am [Replying to JehovahsWitness in post #34]

However the body of knowledge of atheists certainly spans what theists' do, so that is a very unfair comment.
I am also not an atheist.
But here we are, instead of pointing out the tiniest fact that can identify or distinguish what are supposed to be the most profound things in the cosmos; God or gods - from imaginary, you make a statement about those who do not believe.
You should have an easy task.
In another thought:
The fact that all these god are imaginary also ELEGANTLY explains why 'no knows what a god is.'
Those who knew or thought they knew (like paranoid schizophrenics from history - example, those who disappear into the wilderness with a chisel) it came from their imagination, and as such, the imagination of many people as that imagination intersects something that does not exist.
Why gods SHOULD be as variable as unicorns, dragons, wights, fairies, elves, and son of a gun, they are.
Why gods can be as variable as dreams!
And that explains elegantly why no one knows what a god is.
Cool, huh?

Re: Why Doesn't Anyone Know What A God Is?
Post #38God is a conscious, eternal, disembodied being that exists causally prior to the universe who is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent.
People say of the last day, that God shall give judgment. This is true. But it is not true as people imagine. Every man pronounces his own sentence; as he shows himself here in his essence, so will he remain everlastingly -- Meister Eckhart
